Hill Station, WayanadWayanad is one of the exquisite hill stations of Kerala. It is situated at a height of about 700 to 2100 metres amid the majestic mountains of the Western Ghats. The name 'Wayanad' is believed to be a combination of the words Vayal (paddy) and Naad (land), which makes it 'The Land of Paddy Fields'. It is well-known for its lavish plantations of rubber, coffee, tea, cardamom, and pepper that extend over the hills of Wayanad, making it one of the most rejuvenating places in South India.

Wayanad has a significant history. In earlier times, it was ruled by the Veda Tribes. It was then taken by Pazhassi Rajas and later conquered by Hyder Ali. During the reign of Tipu Sultan, Wayanad was handed over to the British. As British started constructing roads and introduced cash crops, the place started to develop extensively. The present Wayanad district was carved out from the areas of Kozhikode and Kannur districts and became the 12th district of Kerala on 1st November, 1980. The place is also home to the oldest and highest number of tribes in Kerala.

Wayanad offers several places of tourist interests. Thirunelli Temple (also called Tirunelli) is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located on the foothills of Brahmagiri, near the Papanasini River in Kerala. Edakkal Caves, situated in the Ambukuthy Hills, are famous for the pre-historic carvings and paintings. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, featuring birds and wild animals such as bison, elephant, deer and tiger, is a major tourist attraction. Banasura Dam located in the north-west of Kalpetta is considered as the largest earth dam of India and is a must visit.

Wayanad enjoys a salubrious weather throughout the year due to its distance from the mean sea level and the thick forest cover. The air is very clean and pure, giving a relaxing effect to the mind and soul. The place is also popular for its Ayurvedic Resorts that are ideal for rejuvenation and meditation. For the adventure seekers, trekking in the Chembra Peak of Wayanad is a popular exciting sports activity. In short, Wayanad with its mist-clad mountains, lush plantations and vast stretches of greenery is a perfect holiday destination.
