Pookat Lake, Wayanad Wayanad is a scenic hill resort nestled among the splendid mountains of the Western Ghats in the north-eastern part of Kerala. It is famous for its mist-clad mountains, lush plantations and vast stretches of greenery. Though Wayanad is a small place, it has many exciting attractions to see. Banasura Dam
Banasura Dam, located in the north west of Kalpetta, is regarded as one of the largest earth dams in India. It is an ideal picnic place surrounded by lush green hills and a vast body of crystal clear water.

Edakkal Caves
Edakkal Caves are two natural caves located about 25 km away from Kalpetta and just 3 km away from Ambalavayal. These caves are famous for the ancient carvings and pictorial writings dating back to the new Stone Age. They can be accessed only by a 1 km trekking trail from Edakkal.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a division of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It is located on the way from Mysore to Sultan Bathery, very near the Karnataka border. It is prominent for a wide range of flora and fauna. Many species of birds and wild animals such as bison, elephant, deer and tiger can be spotted here. Nagarhole and Bandipur National Parks are also nearby which are worth a visit.

Begur Wildlife Sanctuary
This wildlife sanctuary is located at Mananthavady, about 20 km away from Wayanad, near the Western Ghats. It has a thick cover of lush green trees which possess some rare medicinal values. It has a huge variety of bird species as well as animals, such as, deer, tigers, elephants, leopards, boars, etc. For all nature lovers, this sanctuary is a superb place to visit.

Chembra Peak
Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2100m above sea level. It is located near the town of Meppady, just 14 km west of Kalpetta. Permission from the forest office in Meppady is required for trekking up to the Chembra peak. A heart shaped lake (believed to have never dried up) during the journey to the top of the peak is a major tourist attraction.

Kuruva Island
Kuruva Island is positioned on the tributaries of the river Kabani and is a great picnic spot. It is located 17 km east of Mananthavady and covers a vast forest area of 950 acres. It is home to many rare species of birds, herbs and orchids.

Situated 700 m above mean sea level, atop Thamarassery ghat pass, Lakkidi is one of the highest locations in Wayanad. Also called the 'Gateway of Wayanad', it offers a scenic view of the majestic mountain peaks, sprawling vegetation and the deep valley on the south.

Pookat Lake
Pookat Lake is another place to chill out in Wayanad. This is a natural fresh water lake surrounded by evergreen forest and hills. It is located just 3 km east of Vythiri. Here guests can visit the fresh water aquarium or the children's park, enjoy boating or shop for various handicraft items and spices.

Sentinel Rock Waterfall
This waterfall is located 22 km south of Kalpetta in Vellarimala village, near Chooralmala. It is about 200m high, and a popular picnic spot as well as a trekking centre.

Soochippara Waterfall
The Soochippara waterfall, near Mepadi, is a major tourist attraction in the district. The waterfall is located at three levels amid the lush green tea gardens and natural forests and is a genuine treat for nature lovers. These falls range from a height of 100 feet to 300 feet.

Pazhassi Raja Tomb
This tomb is situated at Mananthavady in the Wayanad district, in the memory of Pazhassi Raja who was the earliest to revolt against the British and adapted guerilla warfare techniques.

Pakshipathalam is situated in the Bramha Giri hills, just 7 km towards the north-east of Thirunelli Temple. It is a popular tourist place that can only be reached after trekking. It is famous for the bird sanctuary which is home to a variety of rare species of birds.
